Weekly Training - Bloodborne Pathogens

By Glen Moore Fire Company
March 5, 2019

On Wednesday 2/27/2019, the crew gathered for their weekly training. This week's training was led by Leo Scaccia, Chief of Medic 93, and the focus was on bloodborne pathogens. This is an annual training that provides necessary information to protect emergency responders against the health hazards from exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials, and to reduce their risk from this exposure. Example health hazards include but are not limited to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. The training focuses on universal precautions and to implement the company's "Infection Control Policy" if an exposure were to occur.

After this training, Leo provided information and instruction on how to use CPAP. CPAP is short for "continuous positive airway pressure" and is a form of positive airway pressure ventilator, which applies mild air pressure on a continuous basis to keep the airways continuously open in people who are not able to breathe spontaneously on their own. The volunteer EMT's at the Glen Moore Fire Company are being trained to use CPAP and we will soon be carrying it on our QRS vehicle.
