| Glen Moore Fire Company is a small and progressive department. Our Active Crew is the lifeblood of our organization and is essential to the quality FIRE, RESCUE, and EMS services that we provide to our Citizens on a 24x7x365 basis. With this in mind and the alarming rates of obesity in our society and the Fire Service (73%-88% based on a recent NVFD study), the Chief Officers planned to go on the offensive to help better educate our crews on importance of nutrition, fitness, and clean eating.
With the help of the "Nutrifreak" Sally Meints, we were able to have all of our eyes opened on the importance of good nutrition in our daily lives and also about the deceptive marketing ads that one would perceive as being a "healthy alternatives". Clean eating is defined by Sally as "eating whole, unprocessed, natural foods". She is quick to point out this is not a diet, but a lifestyle change and that nutrition is 80% of your physical success. It is something that everyone can start small like replacing sodas and energy drinks which are full of sugar and chemicals with water. Also understanding food labels and trying to avoid items with more than 5 ingredients. Many common items that we consume have numerous ingredients many which are toxic to our bodies.
This is extremely important in the line of work for First Responders. Many go from calm to chaotic situations in a matter of minutes. Many in the public do not realize that a firefighter responding to a call carries 65+ lbs. of gear and equipment to effectively perform his or her job function. This further proves that we need to be Combat Ready in not only our training components but in clean eating, nutrition, and fitness categories.
On behalf of the entire crew of Station 48, we would like to THANK Sally for assisting all of us in providing tools and real life examples to live a healthier lifestyle and help improve our overall fitness. This in turn, will help us to better serve the communities that we protect. If you would like more information, please visit Sally's website at www.nutrifreak.net |
